Museum-preserved specimens labeled Ascute asconoides (Naturalis Biodiversity Center; GBIF-provided images) appear as small, calcified leucosolenid sponge body fragments typical of calcareous sponges. The preserved material shows a generally tubular/branching habit consistent with leucosolenid sponges, with a light (pale) calcium carbonate skeleton.

GBIF treats Ascute asconoides (Carter, 1886) as an accepted species name and lists the original basionym as Aphroceras asconoides Carter, 1886.
