Visual Description
Across image-linked records for Asconema, commonly depicted individuals show a broad, “leafy” or blade-like growth form (broad, lobed or patch-like habit) typical of Rossellidae/lyssacinosid hexactinellids, with a translucent, glassy appearance consistent with siliceous sponge tissue.
Ecology and Associations
In the bathyal sponge-aggregation habitat context studied in the Cantabrian Sea (Avilés Canyon System vs. El Cachucho Marine Protected Area), an Asconema “sponge field” (F3) is explicitly characterized by the lyssacinosid hexactinellid Asconema setubalense.
Within that F3 context, the associated benthic echinoderm assemblage is reported to be strongly skewed toward starfish (Asteroidea), with brittle stars (Ophiuroidea) also recorded.
