General Information
Ascodipteron Adensamer, 1896, is a genus of endoparasitic bat flies belonging to the family Hippoboscidae (streblid grade) [2] [3]. These specialized insects are distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the Eastern Hemisphere [2]. As of 2021, the genus includes 15 recognized species [2].
Visual Description
Based on observations of Ascodipteron specimens, these flies exhibit extreme morphological specialization associated with their endoparasitic lifestyle [1]. The females are notably dealate (wingless) and neosomic, meaning they undergo significant body modification after settling on their host [2].
