Visual Description
Specimens of Ascandra atlantica in Naturalis museum images are small, vase-/cup-like calcareous sponges with a simple architecture. The gross form appears shallowly cupped to upright, with a narrowed apical region associated with the central opening area. The sponge surface appears finely textured, consistent with calcareous spicules visible at the scale of the preserved specimen, and preserved material appears light-colored/translucent.
