Visual Description
Asarkina porcina is a hoverfly characterized by a slender, elongated body typical of many Syrphidae. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a distinct abdominal pattern featuring alternating bands of dark brown or black and yellow or orange, which provides a wasp-like appearance.[1] The thorax is generally dark with lighter, often yellowish, lateral markings. The wings are clear and held flat over the abdomen when at rest.[1]
Distribution and Taxonomic History
Asarkina porcina (Coquillett, 1898) was originally described as Syrphus porcinus from specimens collected in Japan.[2] The species is widely distributed across Asia, with records from Burma, China, India (including Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal), Japan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.[3] The type material is deposited at the National Museum of Natural History (USNM) in Washington, D.C.[3]
