Asarkina pitamara is a hoverfly characterized by a slender, elongated abdomen typical of the genus Asarkina. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a distinct abdominal pattern consisting of alternating dark and light transverse bands, with the light bands often appearing yellow or orange.[1] The thorax is generally dark, and the wings are clear with prominent venation. The head features large, prominent compound eyes that occupy much of the dorsal surface.[1]
Asarkina pitamara was described by K. Ghorpadé in 1994. The species is recognized as a member of the tribe Syrphini within the family Syrphidae.[2] The original description was published in the work "Diagnostic keys to new and known genera and species of Indian subcontinent Syrphini (Diptera: Syrphidae)".[2]
