Visual Description
Arthropeas species exhibit a distinct appearance characterized by a robust, somewhat elongated body. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal that these flies possess patterned wings, often featuring dark, mottled or banded markings against a lighter, translucent background.[1] The thorax and abdomen typically display a brownish or yellowish coloration, sometimes with longitudinal stripes on the thorax. The head is relatively small in proportion to the body, with prominent eyes.[1]
Classification and Relationships
The genus Arthropeas is classified within the family Xylophagidae.[2] Historically, it has been associated with the Coenomyiidae, a group that, along with the Xylophagidae and Rachiceridae, forms the superfamily Xylophagoidea.[3] The Xylophagoidea are considered to have closer evolutionary affinities with the Stratiomyioidea than with the Tabanidea.[3]
