Visual Description
Based on observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Arthroceras species exhibit a typical dipteran body plan.[1] The flies possess a distinct, segmented abdomen and a pair of functional wings. The thorax is robust, supporting the flight muscles, and the head features prominent compound eyes. The coloration observed in these specimens includes muted, earthy tones, which may serve as camouflage in their natural environments.[1]
Classification and History
The genus Arthroceras was established by Samuel Wendell Williston in 1886.[2] Historically, the placement of this genus has been subject to debate, with members having been assigned to various families such as Coenomyiidae and Xylophagidae.[3] It is currently classified within the family Rhagionidae, a placement supported by several taxonomic studies.[3] Genetic data for the genus is available through NCBI.[4]
