Artemisina (Microcionidae, Demospongiae; Poecilosclerida) is characterized (at the microcionid level) by lacking a distinctive choanosomal skeleton or definite spongin fibres, lacking echinating spicules, and having a nearly radial ectosomal skeleton.
The genus Artemisina is reported to have 19 currently valid species; six are recorded from the Atlantic Ocean, including A. melanoides (together with A. erecta, A. incrustans, A. melana, A. transiens, and A. vulcani).
Original description
Artemisina melanoides is treated as an accepted species name (GBIF) and is attributed to Van Soest, Beglinger & de Voogd (2013), described as a shallow-water Artemisina species from Northeastern Brazil.
