Visual Description
Members of the genus Armigeres are mosquitoes characterized by their robust appearance. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset indicate that these insects typically exhibit a dark, often black or brownish coloration on the thorax and abdomen. The body structure is generally stout compared to many other mosquito genera. Visible traits include a prominent proboscis and patterned wings, which are consistent with their classification within the family Culicidae.[1]
Biology and Ecology
Armigeres is a genus of mosquitoes within the family Culicidae.[2] Some species, such as Armigeres subalbatus, are known to interact with various organisms, including filarial worms of the genus Brugia.[3]
Research into Ar. subalbatus has shown that it acts as a natural vector for Brugia pahangi. However, the species demonstrates refractoriness to Brugia malayi, a resistance mediated by melanotic encapsulation. Transcriptome profiling suggests that the molecular mechanisms underlying susceptibility and resistance in Ar. subalbatus are complex and differ from those observed in other mosquito models like Aedes aegypti.[4]
