Based on observations of museum specimens, Argentinomyia agonis exhibits the characteristic body form of a syrphid fly. The specimens show a dark, sclerotized thorax and abdomen. The wings are elongated and appear brownish or smoky in coloration, extending beyond the tip of the abdomen. The legs are slender and dark-colored. The head is dominated by large, holoptic eyes (in the observed specimens, likely males). These morphological traits are consistent with the general appearance of the genus Argentinomyia as represented in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset.[1]
Argentinomyia agonis was originally described by Francis Walker in 1849 as Syrphus agonis.[2] It is currently recognized as an accepted species within the genus Argentinomyia.[3][2]
