Visual Description
Species of the genus Arctophila are large, robust hoverflies that exhibit a distinct resemblance to bumblebees.[2] Morphological observations from dataset imagery confirm the presence of dense, long pilosity covering both the thorax and the abdomen, which contributes to their bumblebee-like appearance.[1] Additionally, the face is notably extended downwards into a conical snout, and the arista is feathered.[2]
Distribution and Ecology
In Europe, the genus is represented by three species: A. bequaerti, A. bombiforme, and A. superbiens.[2]
- A. bequaerti: Primarily found in southeastern Europe, including the Balkan Peninsula, Turkey, and the Caucasus. It is associated with wetlands, marshes, and forest edges.[2]
- A. bombiforme: A widespread European species typically restricted to mountainous areas, occurring in subalpine grasslands, wetlands, and near forest edges or streams.[2]
- A. superbiens: Widespread from Scandinavia to the Pyrenees and Ireland, and east through central and southern Europe. It is associated with beech-coniferous forests.[2]
Species of Arctophila are often considered rare, with populations frequently restricted to specific mountainous regions. While historically associated with activity in May and June, recent observations indicate activity can extend into the second half of the year, as late as October.[2]
