Visual Description
Arctopelopia is a genus of non-biting midges within the family Chironomidae. As members of the subfamily Tanypodinae, they exhibit the characteristic morphological features of this group. While specific diagnostic traits require microscopic examination of larval or adult specimens, the genus is generally recognized by the structure of the head and mouthparts in the larval stage.[1]
Ecology and Distribution
The genus Arctopelopia has been documented in various aquatic environments. Research into the chironomid fauna of Icelandic springs has identified Arctopelopia as a component of the community inhabiting hot springs, where it has been observed alongside other chironomids such as Cricotopus sylvestris and Procladius species.[2]
Trophic interaction data indicates that species within this genus, such as Arctopelopia barbitarsis, are associated with the consumption of algae and other plant material.[3]
