Visual Description
Archytas rufiventris is a tachinid fly characterized by a robust, bristly body typical of the family. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a prominent, dense covering of black macrochaetae (bristles) across the thorax and abdomen.[1] The abdomen often exhibits a distinct reddish-brown coloration, which is consistent with the specific epithet rufiventris (meaning "red-bellied"). The head features large, prominent compound eyes and a well-developed, forward-projecting facial structure.[1]
Biology and Distribution
Archytas rufiventris was described by Charles Howard Curran in 1928.[2] It is a member of the genus Archytas, a group within the family Tachinidae.[3] Research into the tachinid fauna of Chile has clarified the distribution of several Archytas species, noting that some species previously misidentified or misrecorded from that region, such as A. incertus and A. seminiger, have distributions restricted to other parts of South America.[3]
