Visual Description
Archytas pilifrons is a member of the family Tachinidae, a group of flies often characterized by their robust, bristly appearance. Observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a fly with a stout body, typical of the genus Archytas. The thorax and abdomen are covered in dense, prominent setae (bristles), which are a diagnostic feature of many tachinids. The coloration generally includes metallic or dark tones, with patterns often obscured by the dense setation.[1]
Biology and Classification
Archytas pilifrons was originally described by Schiner in 1868 as Echinomyia pilifrons.[2] Research by Guimarães (1961) on the genus Archytas has identified Archytas pilifrons as a synonym of Archytas marmoratus Townsend.[3]
