Visual Description
Archytas aterrima is a robust fly characteristic of the family Tachinidae. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset indicate that the species possesses a dark, often blackish, overall coloration.[1] The body is typically covered in dense, stiff bristles (setae), which are a common feature among tachinids. The head features large, prominent compound eyes and well-developed antennae. The thorax and abdomen are heavily sclerotized, with the abdomen often showing a distinct, rounded shape typical of the genus Archytas.[1]
Distribution and Classification
Archytas aterrima was originally described by Robineau-Desvoidy in 1830 under the basionym Jurinia aterrima.[2] It is a recognized species within the genus Archytas.[2] In the context of South American tachinid studies, the species has been discussed alongside other Archytas members, with some historical records of related species in Chile being re-evaluated as misidentifications.[3]
