Visual Description
Archinycteribia octophthalma is a specialized, wingless fly. Observations of museum specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a highly modified body structure typical of bat flies.[1] The body is dorsoventrally flattened, facilitating movement through the fur of its host. The legs are robust and elongated, equipped with specialized structures for gripping host hair. The head is small and positioned dorsally on the thorax, a characteristic adaptation in many Nycteribiidae.[1]
Ecology and Biology
Archinycteribia octophthalma is an ectoparasitic fly. It has been documented as an ectoparasite of the bat species Cynopterus speleae.[2] The species was described by Theodor in 1967.[3]
