Visual Description
Archimicrodon nicholsoni is a hoverfly species characterized by a robust, bee-like body form typical of the subfamily Microdontinae. Observations of preserved specimens indicate a dark, often metallic or brownish-black coloration across the thorax and abdomen. The abdomen is notably broad and somewhat flattened, with a distinctively rounded posterior margin. The wings are clear or slightly infuscated, with characteristic venation patterns consistent with the family Syrphidae. The head features large, prominent compound eyes that occupy much of the dorsal surface, and the antennae are relatively long and slender, a feature often used to distinguish members of this genus.[1]
Classification and History
Archimicrodon nicholsoni was originally described by E.W. Ferguson in 1926 as Microdon nicholsoni in his revision of Australian Syrphidae.[2] It is currently recognized as an accepted species within the genus Archimicrodon.[2]
