Visual Description
Archimicrodon brevicornis is a hoverfly species characterized by a robust, somewhat stout body form typical of the subfamily Microdontinae. Observations from available imagery indicate a dark-colored body with a metallic or slightly iridescent sheen. The wings are generally clear or lightly infuscated, and the antennae are relatively short, consistent with the specific epithet brevicornis (meaning "short-horned"). The abdomen is broad and exhibits a distinct, rounded posterior profile.[1]
History and Classification
Archimicrodon brevicornis was originally described by the entomologist Hermann Loew in 1858 under the name Microdon brevicornis.[2] It is currently recognized as an accepted species within the genus Archimicrodon.[2]
