Visual Description
Museum-linked image records under Archaeoscyphia (Anthaspidellidae) include fossil sponge material attributed to taxa such as Archaeoscyphia annulata and Petraia minganensis.
Distribution and Paleoecology
Archaeoscyphia is referenced in Early–Middle Ordovician sponge/algal biofacies associated with open-marine carbonate settings. In the Argentine Precordillera context (San Juan Formation and equivalent facies), Archaeoscyphia occurs within assemblages associated with carbonate wackestones and mudstones of sponge/algal facies near the North American continental margin.[2]
The same study reports small reef-mound occurrences within Archaeoscyphia-bearing, sponge-dominated rocks, interpreted as deposited in normal open marine environments (rather than restricted shallow-shelf conditions).[2]
Nomenclature and Taxonomic Status
GBIF lists Archaeoscyphia Hinde, 1889 (order, accepted) under Porifera, family Anthaspidellidae.[3]
