This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
In museum images linked to GBIF records under Araneosustroma, specimens are preserved as solid, massive to compact stromatoporoid-like bodies. Exposed surfaces show a predominantly planar/laminar organization, with clear textural differences between adjacent preserved layers/areas. Several views emphasize growth-form heterogeneity (compact bulk with localized surface variation), consistent with mineralized skeletal architecture rather than soft-tissue morphology.
Araneosustroma is an order-level taxon within the class Densastromatidae (Phylum Porifera) known from the fossil record. GBIF lists Araneosustroma Lessovaja (1970) as an accepted taxon name.[2]
Stromatoporoid assemblages from Silurian sections (e.g., the Bezymyanny Creek, Chernov Swell) are studied using order-level placements for Araneosustroma and other stromatoporoid taxa. The diagnostic value of species composition within such faunas is emphasized for biostratigraphic correlation, particularly where section dating is complicated by mixed signals and sedimentological complexity.[3]
Within that framework, Araneosustostroma astroplexum is explicitly assigned to Araneosustroma Lessovaja (1970), and its diagnostic morphology (including thin laminae and an astro-rhizal system) is used together with stratigraphic context for interpreting the age of the Bezymyanny Creek material.[3]
