Phylogenetic placement (molecular context)
A mitochondrial (mt) genome phylogenomic analysis of Demospongiae included the atypical demosponge Myceliospongia araneosa and inferred that it belongs within Heteroscleromorpha, specifically within “Clade C3,” recovered as a sister taxon to tetractinellids (Microscleroderma sp. and Leiodermatium sp.).[2]
The study also frames Heteroscleromorpha at a higher level into five main clades (C0–C4), which are used to contextualize relationships among major demosponge lineages including the inferred placement of M. araneosa.[2]
