Visual Description
Araiopogon cyanogaster is a species of robber fly. Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, the species exhibits a distinct metallic blue coloration on the abdomen, which is a notable characteristic of the genus.[1] Morphological studies indicate that the species shows variability in the composition of the mystax, which can contain a mixture of yellow and black bristles, and in the presence of yellow pruinosity on the posterior margin of the mesopleura and abdominal segments.[2]
Biology and Distribution
Araiopogon cyanogaster (Loew, 1851) was originally described within the genus Dasypogon.[3] The genus Araiopogon was established to accommodate several Chilean species, and it is distinguished from Saropogon (sensu stricto) primarily by the structure of the male genitalia, particularly the superior forceps.[2]
The species is closely related to Araiopogon fulvicornis. It can be differentiated from A. fulvicornis by the presence of black markings on the femora and the arrangement of yellow pruinosity on the mesonotum, which forms an aureole around the margin.[2] Specimens have been recorded in Chile and British Guiana.[2]
