Visual Description
Based on observations of Apystomyia elinguis from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, these flies exhibit a slender, elongated body form typical of many dipterans.[2] The specimens display distinct, well-developed wings and a segmented abdomen.[2]
Fossil Record and Distribution
The family is represented in the Cretaceous fossil record, notably by the species Hilarimorphites burmanica, which was identified in Burmese amber.[3] Related taxa have been documented from the Late Jurassic of Kazakhstan, the Late Cretaceous of New Jersey, and the extant fauna of California.[3]
