Apterella molliventris is a small fly characterized by a reduced or absent wing structure, typical of many phorids in this genus. Observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset show a specimen with a distinctively large, pale, and somewhat globular abdomen relative to the size of the thorax.[1] The head features prominent, dark, compound eyes and a set of sensory structures, including antennae, visible in lateral profile. The thorax is darker in coloration compared to the abdomen, and the legs are slender and adapted for walking.[1]
