Based on observations of Apterella specimens, such as Apterella molliventris, the genus exhibits a distinct morphology typical of certain phorid flies.[1] The body is characterized by a robust, somewhat flattened thorax and a noticeably enlarged, rounded abdomen.[1] The coloration is generally dark, with a smooth, chitinous surface texture visible across the dorsal region.[1]
