Visual Description
Aprionus specimens are small flies typical of the family Cecidomyiidae. Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, they exhibit the delicate, slender body form characteristic of many gall midges.[1] Key visible traits include long, slender legs and wings that are relatively large in proportion to the body, often showing a simple venation pattern.[1]
Taxonomic History and Revision
The genus Aprionus was established by Jean-Jacques Kieffer in 1894.[2] Recent taxonomic work has focused on refining the classification of species within this group. A 2016 revision of Micromyinae species previously described by Zoya L. Berest identified several junior subjective synonyms, correcting previous identification errors that stemmed from the misinterpretation of preparation artifacts as valid diagnostic characters.[3]
