Based on observations of preserved specimens, Apophoneura recurrens exhibits typical dipteran morphology. The body is characterized by a brownish coloration, consistent with many members of the family Heleomyzidae. The wings are well-developed and show distinct venation patterns, which are diagnostic features for the species. The thorax and abdomen are covered in fine setae (bristles), which are common in this family.[1]
Apophoneura recurrens was described by the entomologist J. R. Malloch in 1933. The species was formally published in his work on the Acalyptrata of Patagonia and South Chile.[2]
