Visual Description
Based on observations of Apoclea specimens, including Apoclea femoralis[1], these robber flies exhibit a slender, elongated body form typical of many Asilidae. They possess prominent, compound eyes and robust, bristly legs adapted for predatory behavior. The wings are generally clear or lightly tinted, and the thorax and abdomen often display patterns of fine hairs or setae.[1]
Distribution and Classification
The genus Apoclea was described by Macquart in 1838.[2] It is classified within the subfamily Apocleinae.[3] The genus has a broad distribution, spanning the Afrotropical, Oriental, and Palearctic regions.[3]
In Iraq, the genus is represented by Apoclea femoralis (Wiedemann, 1828), which has been documented in field collections.[3]
