Aplysinopsis bergquistae was described as a new species from Clipperton Island (East Pacific). It is assigned to the keratose sponge family Thorectidae and the genus Aplysinopsis on the basis of a combination of diagnostic skeletal and surface features, including a light surface sand covering and a particular arrangement of cored primary fibers with uncored secondary fibers.
Known from beneath intertidal coral rocks (Clipperton Island), i.e., an under-rock microhabitat within an intertidal coral setting.
The authors emphasize that prior records of Aplysinopsis were “only reliably represented” by the Australian type species (A. elegans) with junior synonyms, and that other prior assignments either concerned other genera or were treated as incertae sedis; thus, recognition of a second valid Aplysinopsis species from the remote locality of Clipperton is notable.
