Aplysinidae is an accepted demospongian sponge family within the order Verongiida.
Visual Description
Occurrence images of Aplysinidae commonly show large, soft-bodied demosponges with an upright/erect, columnar to lobate growth form. For example, Aplysina aerophoba is frequently depicted as a yellow-to-golden upright sponge with branching to lobate surface outlines (a characteristic “aureate” look in photographed records).
Higher-level Phylogenetic Context (Demospongiae)
Hill et al. (2013) reconstructed family-level phylogenetic relationships within Demospongiae using sequences from seven nuclear housekeeping genes. In their framework, Verongida (where Aplysinidae is placed) is recovered as monophyletic, supporting the family’s placement within a cohesive Verongida lineage.
