Genus Aplysinella comprises marine verongimorph demosponges (family Aplysinellidae). Chemical defense and induced responses
Rohde et al. (2015) tested predation-related cues versus wounding-related cues in tropical sponges (including Aplysinella sp., Aplysinellidae) in laboratory assays of chemical defense.
- Simulated predation (induction) increased antimicrobial activity for Aplysinella sp. in disc diffusion assays.
- Wounding/activation did not increase antimicrobial activity for Aplysinella sp. in that study.
