Species overview
Aplysina revillagigedi is an Aplysinidae sponge described from the Mexican Pacific (Revillagigedo Archipelago). The species was diagnosed using an integrative approach combining morphology, biochemical/chemical information, and molecular markers (COI and ITS) to delimit species boundaries within Aplysina. [2]
Diagnostic morphology (field and preserved traits)
The species is described as cushion-shaped to massive, with green to lemon-yellow coloration in life. [2]
Notable external features include conspicuous oscules (typically circular to oval). Oscules are commonly organized on sponge rims/edges rather than only at apices. [2]
Skeletal/spongin characters include an irregular polygonal reticulation of sponging fibers (single fiber category), with surface-associated fibers tending to become ramified/dendritic and ending in rounded tips. [2]
Distribution and habitat
Occurrence is reported from the Revillagigedo Archipelago area (Socorro and Clarion islands) in the Mexican Pacific. [2]
The species occurs on rock substrates and vertical walls exposed to strong water movement, including shallow clear-water sites; at least one record indicates occurrence at approximately 38 m depth. [2]
Molecular evidence and phylogenetic context
For A. revillagigedi, nuclear ITS supported morphological species differences, while mitochondrial COI showed extremely low but diagnostic variability. [2]
At the genus level, the same study reports that Aplysina species form regionally structured groups (Eastern Pacific and Caribbean) and that Eastern Pacific species cluster largely in accordance with morphological taxonomy. [2]
