Visual Description
Field observations and museum material associated with this species are commonly labeled as the “convoluted barrel sponge”. Images show an upright, barrel- to cup-shaped body with a large opening at the top (osculum area) and a surface characterized by convoluted/irregular ridges or folds.
Name, status, and taxonomy notes
GBIF lists Aplysina lacunosa (Lamarck, 1814) as an accepted species name and includes the basionym Spongia lacunosa Lamarck, 1814.
Chemistry (selected)
Aplysina lacunosa produces bromotyrosine-derived alkaloids. In a study of Caribbean material (Stirrup Cay, Bahamas), researchers reported three newly characterized bromotyrosine-derived compounds—14-debromo-11-deoxyfistularin-3, aplysinin A, and aplysinin B—along with additional known bromotyrosine alkaloids.
