This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Across image records for Aplysina fistularis, the species is visually characterized by a bright yellow to orange-brown coloration and a tube-like growth form (“yellow tube sponge” / “candle sponge”). Individuals typically present as one or more upright, cylindrical/tubular structures arising from a basal attachment area, rather than as encrusting mats.
In biomedical research, purified chitin scaffolds derived from Aplysina fistularis have been tested as scaffold materials for tissue-engineering applications. A 2023 study reported that A. fistularis–derived chitin scaffolds (including a hydroxyapatite-modified variant) supported adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation-related readouts in human dental pulp stem cells.
