Overview
Aplysina is a genus of demosponges (family Aplysinidae) that includes species such as Aplysina aerophoba and Aplysina fistularis (often referred to in common names as “aureate sponge” and “candle sponge,” respectively). The genus was described by Nardo in 1834.[2]
Ecology and physiology (generalizable)
Members of Aplysina show strong coupling between internal tissue oxygenation and pumping behavior. In the Mediterranean sponge Aplysina aerophoba, when pumping ceases for prolonged periods, molecular diffusion becomes the dominant route of oxygen transport into sponge tissue, and internal anoxia can develop rapidly. [3]
