Visual Description
Apiocera maxima exhibits the characteristic elongated, robust body form typical of the family Apioceridae. Observations of specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a distinct, slender abdomen that tapers towards the posterior, often with visible banding or patterns along the segments. The wings are generally clear and well-developed, extending along the length of the abdomen. The head features prominent, large eyes and specialized mouthparts adapted for their ecological niche. The overall coloration is often muted, consisting of shades of brown, grey, or tan, which may provide camouflage in their natural habitat.[1]
Taxonomy and Classification
Apiocera maxima was described by the entomologist S.J. Paramonov in 1953 as part of his review of the Australian Apioceridae.[2] It is currently recognized as an accepted species within the genus Apiocera.[2]
