Visual Description
Members of the genus Apiloscatopse are small flies that generally exhibit a dark, often black, coloration across the head, antennae, scutum, pleura, and abdominal segments.[2] Observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal a compact body form typical of the family Scatopsidae, with distinct, dark-pigmented wings and a robust thorax.[1] The halteres are typically yellowish brown, and the tibiae may range from blackish to yellowish brown.[2]
Distribution and Ecology
The genus Apiloscatopse is distributed across the Holarctic and Afrotropical regions.[2] These flies are often associated with forest habitats, where they are thought to develop in media such as leaf litter and fungi, similar to other members of the family.[2]
