Aphrosylus atlanticus is a small fly characteristic of the family Dolichopodidae. Based on photographic observations, the species exhibits a slender, elongated body form typical of many long-legged flies. The thorax and abdomen are generally dark in coloration, often appearing metallic or dull greyish-brown, which may provide camouflage in its coastal or rocky habitats. The wings are clear and held horizontally or slightly angled over the abdomen when at rest. The legs are notably long and slender, a diagnostic feature of the family, allowing the insect to move efficiently across substrates.[1]
Aphrosylus atlanticus was described by Christine Dahl in 1960. The species is recognized as an accepted name within the genus Aphrosylus.[2] The original description was published in the Boletim do Museu Municipal do Funchal, detailing specimens from the Azores and Madeira.[2]
