Visual Description
Specimens attributed to Aphroceras ensata (Grantiidae) show the typical calcarea “leucosolenoid” growth form: an upright to cup-shaped calcified sponge body with a surrounding network of small pore openings rather than a massive form.
Nomenclature and status
- Aphroceras ensata was originally described by Bowerbank in 1858 (as Grantia ensata) and is accepted in GBIF under the combination Aphroceras ensata.[2]
