Visual Description
Calcareous sponge species Aphroceras alcicornis (family Grantiidae) is represented in museum collections as a small, upright growth form with a branching, antler-like appearance. Specimens show a pale, translucent to whitish tissue in preserved state, with multiple finger-like projections arising from a common base.
Species Status and Authorship
GBIF lists Aphroceras alcicornis as an accepted species name and attributes the taxon to Gray (1858) (as Aphroceras alcicornis Gray, 1858).[2]
