In situ / photographic and museum-record images for Aphrocallistes show the characteristic “glass sponge” habit typical of Hexactinellida: usually a relatively rigid, upright sponge body with a pale, translucent appearance (often described in occurrence metadata for A. vastus as a “cloud glass sponge”).

A mitochondrial genome has been characterized for the species Aphrocallistes vastus, providing a useful molecular reference for this genus/family.
- The study reports the first complete mitochondrial genome for A. vastus and describes it as a circular 17,427 bp molecule containing 13 protein-coding genes, divergent large and small subunit rRNA genes, and a reduced set of 18 tRNAs.[2]
- The authors report patterns consistent with hexactinellid mitochondrial translational frameshifting, describing frameshifts in cox3 and nad6 that are not corrected by RNA editing, and present evidence for +1 programmed translational frameshifting based on conserved shift-site sequence features.[2]
