Based on museum specimens, Aphidoletes urticaria exhibits the characteristic delicate, slender morphology typical of the family Cecidomyiidae. The specimens show long, thin legs and wings that are relatively large in proportion to the body size, consistent with the general appearance of gall midges.[1]
Aphidoletes urticaria (Kieffer, 1895) is a species within the genus Aphidoletes.[2] Like other members of its genus, it is associated with aphidophagous larvae.[3] The species shares a similar worldwide distribution and range of prey with the well-known biological control agent Aphidoletes aphidimyza.[3] Despite these similarities, there are currently no documented applications of A. urticaria as a biological control agent for aphids, and its potential in this capacity remains to be investigated.[3]
