Visual Description
Aphanotrigonum nigripes is a small fly characteristic of the family Chloropidae. While specific morphological traits are difficult to resolve from the available citizen science imagery, the species generally exhibits the small, often robust body form typical of grass flies.[1]
Ecology and Distribution
Aphanotrigonum nigripes (Zetterstedt, 1848) is a Holarctic, boreal species of grass fly.[2] It has been documented in diverse habitats, including meadows, wetlands, and coastal environments such as intertidal and supralittoral zones.[2]
The species is known to hibernate as an adult.[2] Larval development occurs within the stems of plants that have been previously damaged by other insects, and adults have been observed on and reared from cereal stems.[2] Interactions have been recorded with various grasses, including Thinopyrum elongatum, Elymus caninus, and Elymus athericus.[3] In studies of dune ecosystems, it has been identified as a significant component of the local chloropid community.[2]
