Visual Description
Based on examination of museum specimens, Apetaenus australis exhibits the characteristic morphology of the subfamily Apetaeninae. The specimens appear as small, robust flies with reduced wings, a common adaptation in subantarctic environments. The body coloration is generally dark, consistent with other members of the genus.[1]
Distribution and Ecology
Apetaenus australis belongs to the subfamily Apetaeninae, which is endemic to various subantarctic archipelagos.[2] These flies are notably present in the subantarctic islands of New Zealand.[2]
