Based on observations of preserved specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Apelleia grossa exhibits the characteristic body form of the family Acroceridae, often referred to as small-headed flies.[1] The specimens display a notably robust, humpbacked thorax and a relatively small head in proportion to the rest of the body. The abdomen appears broad and rounded, consistent with the general morphology of the genus.[1]
Apelleia grossa was originally described by C.R. Osten Sacken in 1887 under the name Ocnaea grossa.[2] It is currently recognized as an accepted species within the genus Apelleia.[2]
