This page represents the following TreeOfLife-200M taxonomic path.[1]
Based on observations from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, members of the genus Apedilum exhibit typical chironomid morphology, characterized by a slender, elongated body form. The specimens display delicate, multi-segmented antennae and wings that are held folded over the abdomen when at rest. The thorax is robust and arched, a common feature among non-biting midges.[1]
Apedilum is a genus within the family Chironomidae. Research into specific species, such as Apedilum elachistius, highlights their ability to colonize ephemeral habitats, such as rock pools. This species is notable for having one of the shortest generation times recorded for any chironomid, completing its life cycle in less than 7 days at 28°C.[2]
Apedilum elachistius is considered a generalist, capable of inhabiting various water bodies including temporary pools and brackish waters. It exhibits a broad temperature tolerance, ranging from at least 8°C to 42°C, and does not demonstrate selective feeding behaviors.[2]
