Based on observations of specimens in the TreeOfLife-200M dataset, Apatolestes villosulus exhibits a robust, hairy appearance characteristic of many tabanids.[1] The body is densely covered in fine, pale setae, giving it a somewhat fuzzy or "villosulus" (hairy) texture. The wings are generally clear or slightly tinted, with distinct venation typical of the family. The eyes are large and prominent, occupying a significant portion of the head, which is a common feature in this group.
Apatolestes villosulus was originally described by the entomologist Bigot in 1892 under the name Tabanus villosulus.[2] It is currently recognized as an accepted species within the genus Apatolestes.[2]
