Visual Description
Apatolestes comastes is a species of horse fly within the family Tabanidae. Observations of specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal several characteristic morphological traits.[1] The species exhibits a robust body typical of many tabanids. The compound eyes are prominent and occupy a significant portion of the head. The thorax and abdomen are covered in dense, often pale or yellowish-grey pubescence, giving the insect a somewhat fuzzy appearance. The wings are generally clear or slightly tinted, with distinct venation characteristic of the family.[1]
History and Classification
Apatolestes comastes was formally described by the entomologist Samuel Wendell Williston in 1885.[2] The original description was published in his work on the classification of North American Diptera.[2]
