Visual Description
Antillus ascitus is a species of hoverfly within the family Syrphidae. Observations of specimens from the TreeOfLife-200M dataset reveal characteristic features of the genus.[1] The body exhibits a slender, elongated form typical of many Syrphini. The abdomen displays distinct, patterned markings, often consisting of alternating dark and lighter bands or spots, which are common in this group. The wings are generally clear and held in a characteristic position when at rest. The head is dominated by large, prominent compound eyes, which in some specimens appear to meet or nearly meet at the dorsal midline.
Distribution and Classification
Antillus ascitus was described by J.R. Vockeroth in 1969 as part of his revision of the genera of the Syrphini.[2] It is an accepted species within the genus Antillus.[2]
